Before bidding for a Dubai plate: separate the fee, deposit and final bill
2 min read
RTA’s 121st open plate auction is scheduled for 24 October at Dubai Hilton Al Habtoor City. Registration starts on 19 October through RTA’s website and its Umm Ramool, Deira and Al Barsha centres. Venue admission begins at 2pm on auction day; the announcement does not specify that as the bidding start.
Participants need a Dubai traffic file, an AED25,000 security-deposit cheque and an AED120 non-refundable participation fee. RTA says the deposit is refundable if you do not win a number. Keep these separate in your notes: the deposit is not the plate’s price, and the fee is not refundable.
Winners must pay within 10 working days of the auction. RTA warns that non-payment can lead to deposit forfeiture and listing as a non-compliant bidder. Sales carry 5% VAT. Confirm the payment process and exact deadline with RTA before participating.
Make one page for your own decisions. List the exact plate code and digits you are interested in, the maximum total you are prepared to spend and the questions still unanswered. Separate the refundable security amount from money you are willing to spend permanently. Ask how the deposit is handled after a successful bid, rather than assuming the announcement explains every settlement step.
Check the official registration route yourself. Keep your registration confirmation and the applicable conditions together, and ask what documents to bring. If a message or screenshot gives different payment instructions, return to the RTA website or a listed Customer Happiness Centre to clarify them. A forwarded image is a poor filing system for an expensive decision.
Before auction day, decide what will make you stop bidding. A memorable number can be a personal preference; that does not establish a future resale price. Treat claims about appreciation separately from the official participation rules. This guide explains the announcement and helps organise questions; it does not recommend a plate as an investment.
Finally, check the venue arrangements and leave time for registration formalities. Put any payment deadline in your calendar only after confirming it with RTA, then retain the receipt and ownership documentation supplied through the official process. The number may be short. The paperwork still deserves a complete folder.
