Beyond the green claim: what a sustainability award recognises

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group announced the winners of its tenth annual Sustainable Business Leadership Awards on 3 October. The categories cover different kinds of work, from energy management to reporting and leadership. For anyone comparing companies or reading a property brochure, that distinction is a useful place to start.

ABB Power Transmission and Distribution won Best Energy Management Initiative, while First Abu Dhabi Bank received Best Sustainability Report. These are different awards for different achievements. Reading the category alongside the winner’s name gives you more information than the word “sustainable” on its own.

When a brochure mentions an award, trace it back to the organiser’s announcement. Note the recipient, the category and the year. Then ask how the claim relates to the particular building, service or product you are considering. Recognition of a company’s report does not tell you the electricity consumption of a particular apartment.

For a home or workplace, turn a broad environmental statement into a specific question. If the subject is energy use, ask what was measured, over which period, and for which space. If it is a design target, ask whether the figure describes an expectation or a recorded result. Keeping those two labels separate makes the answer easier to understand.

An illustrative example: a forecast reduction for a proposed building and a measured reduction for an occupied building answer different questions. Before comparing percentages, check the starting point and what each calculation includes. A shared percentage sign does not make two figures comparable.

Keep a small evidence note with three entries: the exact claim, the document supporting it, and the question that remains unanswered. This is our suggested reading method, not an ADSG scoring rule or a new regulatory requirement. It helps you return to the substance when a presentation moves quickly.

The awards announcement says an independent expert panel assessed the entries. That recognition can be a reason to explore the work in more detail. Start with the award’s actual scope, then look for evidence relevant to your own decision.
