Choosing pet care in Abu Dhabi: ask about the person, not just the premises
2 min read
Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and the Department of Municipalities and Transport announced professional conformity programmes for animal-related occupations on 9 October. The framework covers areas including handling, transport, sheltering and care. Workers receive certificates after completing training and passing approved examinations. For pet owners, the announcement is a useful prompt to ask who will actually be responsible for an animal during a service.
Start with the person doing the work. Ask the provider which staff member will handle your pet, what relevant training they have completed and whether they hold a certificate under the announced programme. If a certificate is offered as evidence, ask whose name and role it covers. The launch announcement alone does not establish that every worker or business is already certified.
Then describe the exact service you need. A collection journey, a grooming appointment and an overnight stay involve different handovers. Ask who receives the animal, who has responsibility during each stage and how a change of staff is communicated. A reassuring reception area tells you very little about those arrangements.
Prepare a short written handover with the provider: your contact details, an alternative contact you have permission to name, the agreed collection time and your pet’s existing routine. Ask how the service records the instructions you supply and how it contacts you if something unexpected happens. Discuss any medical requirements with your veterinarian and the provider rather than assuming a general care booking includes clinical services.
Ask to understand the arrangements for your particular animal. Where will it wait? Will it share space with other animals? How is transport organised if transport is part of the booking? Ask the provider to explain the procedure in plain language and record what is included in the quoted service. These are practical questions, not a claim that a specific arrangement is required by the new programme.
Keep the booking confirmation, the named contact and the agreed handover together. At collection, ask for a brief account of the service and any observations the next carer should know. Clear records make it easier to follow up on a concern without reconstructing several phone conversations. The useful standard for an owner is an explanation that stays clear after the sales pitch ends.
